Rethinking Ecommerce packaging

There are a lot of changes that have recently come about, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. A lot of it, is the rise of ecommerce business.  One big change with ecommerce packaging is the type of options that we have.  with more and more people staying at home, you’ve got to look at it from the mindset of customers getting packages at a door.

Packaging also has been changed too. There are containers used for retail, but also, in the realm of regular sales, most containers get coddled, and then, they’re basically left on the line of production, are palletized, and from there put into trucks, leaving to head to the store. They’re then put on shelves, before they’re taken into the cart, and also put into a consumer’s home.

During the ecommerce part of the journey, a lot of bottles, containers, and even cleaners also do a rigorous journey too, with many of them being subjected to tests and the like to ensure that everything comes in one piece.

There is a now lingering trend that people have for plastic containers that are lightweight, and this has started to haunt many owners of brands. Some other materials and the like don’t get immune to this, and some people may also have a struggle with the packaging breaking as well.

This then creates the problem of chargebacks, which are dreaded by different companies. If the packaging comes in a film that's made of bubble wrap, it minimizes the damage during the transit process, but if it’s there, you can charge this back to the owner sometimes. But with the margins being thinner than before, a lot of times, chargebacks can cause profits to be wiped out if you’re not careful.

Continuing this as well, there is a chance that retailers will think that the packaging will go through a variety of different tests, including the ECT and the drop tests, before they’re given the correct grade.

That means for a lot of companies, you have to begin thinking outside the box, creating some packaging that actually is safe for you to use.  That’s because, if you’re not doing this, you’re going to miss out on a ton of branding opportunities. People purchase using this a lot, and it’s only going to grow higher. If you haven’t begun with this, now is the time, since this is basically the type of packaging you need to have, and if you don’t take care of it now, you’re going to be left behind.

So what can packaging companies do at this point? What can they utilize to ensure that they’re ready for anything? Well, if you haven’t already, check your packaging, and make sure that there is enough padding in place for you to have the item go from point A to point B in a safe, effective manner. If you don’t have this, that's point number one to focus on.

The second thing is to make sure that you also focus as well, on the possibility of ensuring that the packaging is sustainable. Try to minimize the use of plastics, and also, try to encourage cardboard for the materials.  Encourage recyclability with the proper branding. Finally, make sure that your items aren’t being stuffed into boxes too big for this, and make sure that you’re careful with this.

When it comes to ecommerce, you have to understand that there are now more steps to take than ever before, and lots of people don’t realize this until it’s too late, which is why it’s vital to do so.
